Exploring the relationship between architecture, landscape, and nature

This book examines the enduring American idea of untouched wilderness and its influence on how people understand landscapes and nature. Inspired by the work of 19th-century American painter Thomas Cole, it presents student-designed architectural projects for a new gallery at Cedar Grove, his historic home and studio in Catskill, New York.

Through five design approaches, the projects explore how architecture can respond to both the physical and ideal qualities of landscape and nature. Essays by leading designers and thinkers provide further insight into these connections and Cole’s artistic legacy.
